THE BAHIA PALACE
The Bahia Palace is not an historic landmark like the other monuments in Marrakech.
However, the site is recognised for the richness of its architecture. Its construction is recent, from the 19th century, and was inspired by Arabic and Andalusian styles.
The building of the palace was begun in 1880 by order of the vizier Sidi Moussa who was at the head of the Moroccan kingdom.
He ordered the construction of a luxurious residence just to please one of his companions. He then offered a palace made up of around 160 rooms to her.
This provides an explanation for the name of the monument which means "palace of the beautiful". Around the building, visitors can walk in the courtyards and gardens which have entranced its past occupants.
An anecdote: The construction time of the Bahia Palace (7 years) is at the origin of a famous Moroccan expression: "Bahia is finally finished", used when a matter remains unresolved for a long time.
